Prefix used to signify under or deficiency. From the Gr., ypo, under. In chemistry, in contrast to hyper, it denotes a smaller quantity of oxygen than is found in the compounds to which it is not prefixed. Thus sulphurous acid, (H2SO3), hyposulphurous acid (H2SO2).
