An English theologian and historical writer; born at Place in Cornwall, May 3, 1648; died at Norwich, Nov. 1, 1724. He was a minister of the established Church, and became dean of Norwich in 1702. His chief writings are: "Validity of the Orders of the Church of England" (1688); "The Case of Clandestine Marriages Stated" (1691); "Life of Mahomet" (1697); "The Old and New Testament Connected in the History of the Jews", a work of great research and learning (1716).
