(1586-1647), fled from England to Holland in 1630 on a charge of non-conformity. He escaped to New England in 1633, and was chosen pastor at Newtown (now Cambridge) of the eighth church established in the Massachusetts colony. With one hundred members of the community he emigrated to Connecticut in 1636, and founded the town of Hartford. He was chosen pastor of the church at that place and was very prominent in all the affairs of the colony. He was author of "Survey of the Summe of Church Discipline."
