The elastic limit on a solid material. The strain is measured to show how much a material can take and have the same shape. When the limit is passed it is the limit of proportionality. Robert Hooke discovered this in 1676. Refer to elastic modulus.

The law that if a body is distorted within the limits of perfect elasticity, the force with which it reacts is simply proportional to the amount of distortion. As a consequence of this law, the oscillations set up on the constraint being removed suddenly are isochronous.
