An American prose writer; born near Mocksville, N. C., Dec. 27, 1829. In 1857 appeared the notable work "The Impending Crisis of the South", which the Republican party used as a campaign document, with great effect. "The Three Americas Railway" was published in 1881, and was followed by "Nojoque"; "The Negroes in Negroland"; "The Land of Gold"; "Oddments of Andean Diplomacy"; etc.
