Politician, born in 1843, was a member of the New York Assembly in 1871 and 1872. He was president of the Democratic State Conventions of 1877 and 1881. He was Lieutenant-Governor of New York in 1882, and Governor from 1885 to 1891. He was in 1891 elected U.S. Senator for the term expiring in 1897.
