A German poet; born at Rechtenfleth, near Bremen, Feb. 11, 1821. He wrote: "Book of the Marshes" (1857), a faithful portrayal of nature and men in his native country; "Poems" (1860); "Roman Sauntering Days" (1869), subtle delineations of Italian life; "Electra" (1872), a drama, continuing and concluding the plot of Goethe's "Iphigenia".
