An American story-writer and novelist; born in Chicago of New England blood, 1857. He was intended for a mercantile career, but entered literature anonymously with "The Chevalier of Pensieri-Vani" (new ed. 1892), and "The Chatelaine of La Trinite (1892). He next wrote "The Cliff Dwellers" (1893), and "With the Procession" (1895), novels of Chicago life; "Under the Skylights".
