An English novelist; born in Jamaica about 1807; died in Edinburgh, Feb. 8, 1885. Well educated and clever, she wrote fiction as a means of livelihood. Her "Cousin Stella" (1859), a portrayal of West-Indian life and manners, made a hit; as did "Who Breaks, Pays" (1861), in which the flirt is admirably pictured. Her other novels are only mediocre.
