A treaty of commerce and for the extradition of criminals was concluded between the United States and Hawaii in 1849, and a reciprocity treaty in 1875, extended by the Convention of 1887. Treaty rights were further confirmed by Act of Congress in 1891. The coup d'etal of January, 1893, deposed the queen and established a republic, which immediately asked for annexation by the United States. An annexation treaty was concluded February 14, 1893, providing for the cession to the United States of all rights of sovereignty in the Hawaiian Islands and their dependencies; for reference to the U.S. Congress of all questions of administration, the provisional government meanwhile to continue under United States guidance; for the assumption by the United States of the Hawaiian debt to the limit of $3,250,000; for the regulation of Chinese immigration; and for the support of deposed royalty. The close of the session of Congress prevented its ratification by that body, and the incoming administration proving hostile to the treaty it remains still unratified (May, 1894).
