Born in New York in 1839, was associated with the San Francisco Golden Era in 1857, edited for a short time the Californian, and in 1868 established the Overland Monthly. He has mostly written sketches of American frontier life. From 1880 to 1885 he was U.S. Consul at Glasgow.
