(1755-1776), born in Connecticut, joined a volunteer company at the first news of the Revolutionary War, participated in the siege of Boston, and was made captain in 1776. He captured the British supply ship "Asia," and volunteered to reconnoitre the position of the British forces. He was apprehended and hanged as a spy, his last words being, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."

(1784-1863), editor of the Boston Daily Advertiser from 1814 to 1863, was one of the founders of the North American Review and was active in promoting industrial improvement.
