German Grutze; Grutum, Avena excorticata; (F.) Gruau, Oatmeal, ( Yorkshire.) Oats, hulled, but unground, (Lancashire.) Hulled oats, half ground. Oats that have the hulls taken off; Grits, (Prov.) Cutlins. When crushed, they are termed Embden groats. In America, fine hominy is called Grits, and wheat prepared in the same way is likewise so designated. It is also called wheaten hominy.
