An encampment of Confederate forces under Lee. Reynolds, the Federal commander in that quarter, left his camp at Elkwater, October 2, 1861, with 5000 men and a large artillery force and advanced against the Confederates. Kimball attacked the Confederates front and right, while Milroy cleared the Green Briar bridge. The fighting continued fiercely for some time, but there was no decisive victory, for Reynolds, having gained the bridge, sounded the recall.
