An English novelist; born at Hackney, June 2, 1816; died in Frankfort-on-the-Main, Sept. 16, 1847. She was the daughter of Jewish parents of Spanish origin. Her first books were in defense of the Jewish religion: "The Spirit of Judaism" (1842); "The Jewish Faith" (1846); and "Women of Israel" (1846). She is now best known by her domestic and sentimental novels, only one of which, "Home Influence" (1847), appeared in her lifetime. Among others are: "The Vale of Cedars" (1850) and "The Days of Bruce" (1852).
