(1539-1584), English navigator, half brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, sought to discover a northwest passage to India, and wrote a treatise on the subject. In 1578 he made an expedition which met with no success. In 1583 he planted a colony at Newfoundland which did not prosper. On his return he was lost at sea.
