A distinguished French Romance philologist; born at Avenay, Aug. 9, 1839. He was professor of the French language and literature at the College de France, and did much to arouse interest in the study of Romance philology. "A Poetical History of Charlemagne" (1866); "Poetry of the Middle Ages" (1885), and "French Mediaeval Literature" (1888), were his most important publications. He was a member of German, Austrian, and Italian academies. Died at Paris, March 6, 1903.
