Aniline red: a name given to several red pigments derived from aniline, but particularly to rosaniline hydrochloride, also known as rosein, azalein, magenta, and solferino. F. is used as a stain; in diseases of the larynx and fauces; as a protective to inflamed surfaces; and as a parasiticide. English f., rosaniline acetate.

A commercial name for any monacid salt of rosanilin, especially a mixture of rosanilin hydrochlorid and pararosanilin hydrochlorid. It is used in solution in various liquids as a dye for microscopical sections, especially for staining bacteria. Therapeutically it has been employed in albuminuria.
