The name given to the pigeons of the genus Carpophagus, birds of very brilliant plumage, occurring in India, the warmer parts of Australia, etc. During the breeding season a curious gristly knoc grows on the base of the upper mandible of some of the species, and soon after disappears. They are so called because they feed entirely on fruit.
