(1710-1759), British soldier, was appointed brigadier-general in America in 1757, and was adjutant-general in the expedition against Louisbourg. He commanded the expedition against Fort Duquesne, accompanied by Washington with 2000 Virginians; and after taking possession named it Fort Pitt (now Pittsburg), in honor of William Pitt.
