(1770-1837), a States-rights Democrat from Virginia, in Congress from 1817 to 1829, was Governor of Virginia from 1830 to 1834, and was a personal friend of Jefferson, Madison, Crawford and Jackson. In 1832 South Carolina cast her electoral votes for him as President.
