In Rom. Law, sureties for any one on bail, came in Eccl. L. to mean sponsors ; called also Sponsores susceptores [Gr.]. The term Fide jussores is now used for bail sureties in the Instance Court of the Admiralty.- Admiral Smyth's Sailor's Word-Book.
