A Grecian scholar and educational writer; born in Tsangaranda, Thessaly, Greece, March 8, 1807; died in Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 17, 1883. Coming to America in 1829, he became professor of ancient, modern, and Byzantine Greek in Harvard University in 1860. Among his publications are: "Romaic Grammar" (1842; 2d ed. Boston, 1857; London, 1866); "Glossary of Later and Byzantine Greek" (1860, forming Vol. vii., new series of "Memoirs of the American Academy"); and "Greek Lexicon of the Roman and Byzantine Periods", his most important work (1870).
