That agitation, which is produced by the escape of gas through a liquid, independently of the heat of the mixture; such, for instance, as results from the mixture of acetic acid and carbonate of potassa. In Pathology it has a similar signification. It expresses, in the language of the humorists, a sort of ebullition in the fluids of the living body, produced either by elevation of temperature or by the reaction on each other of the principles contained in the fluids in circulation.
