-UM, ek-tr[=o]p'i-on, -um, n. eversion of the margin of the eyelid, so that the red inner surface is exposed.--adj. ECTROP'IC. [Gr. ek, out, and trepein, to turn.]
By Thomas Davidson
-
Eversion, of the eyelids, so that they do not completely cover the globe of the eye. It happens more commonly to the lower than to the upper eyelid. It may be owing to the retraction of the skin, after the cure of an ulcer, wound, or burn of the eyelid; or it may depend on tumefaction or relaxation of the conjunctiva. In the majority of cases, removal of a portion of the conjunctiva will effect a cure; but there are many which defy the efforts of art. The ancients called Ectropion of the upper eyelid lagophthalmia.
