(1647-1720), of Massachusetts, was one of the Commissioners for New England from 1677 to 1681, and in 1682 went to England on behalf of the Massachusetts colony. He was appointed president of New England by James II. in 1685, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1687. From 1690 to 1693 he was Chief Justice of New York, and from 1702 to 1715 was Governor of Massachusetts. He was always friendly to the royal interests.
