(1811-1882), born in England, came to America in 1832. He made extensive contributions to science, particularly in the line of chemistry and the action of light. During the Civil War he was inspector of hospitals. He wrote an excellent "History of the Civil War," 3 vols., 1870, and a "History of the Intellectual Development of Europe," 1863, after the manner and theories of Buckle.
