A Spanish prince and famous miscellaneous writer; born at Escalona, 1282; died 1347 or 1349. Holding the highest offices in the State,- being joint regent of Spain in 1320,- and twice in arms against his king, as well as commander-in-chief against the Moors, his life was a stormy one. He was one of the first and best of Spanish prose-writers. He is best known by "El Conde Lucanor" (Count Lucanor: 1575), a collection of fifty tales in the Eastern style. It was translated into English by James York (new ed. 1888).
