A Portu guese poet; born in Lisbon, Jan. 8, 1728; died 1770. He was left at his father's death the oldest of seven children, and was apprenticed to a barber, but pursued by himself the study of Portuguese literature and that of other countries. The money gained by his writings was lost in the Lisbon earthquake. His most famous work is "Inez de Castro", besides which he wrote four other dramas and many poems.
