An American writer (1811-59), daughter of Leonard Bacon. She is best remembered for her "Philosophy of the Plays of Shakespeare" (1857); to which Nathaniel Hawthorne (without concurring) wrote a preface, and which brought into prominence the Bacon-Shakespeare controversy.
