A Russian story-writer and etymologist; born in Lugan, Nov. 22, 1801; died in Moscow, Oct. 4, 1872. He wrote many powerful realistic tales, besides an "Expository Dictionary of "The Living Russian Languages" (1861-68) and a dictionary of proverbs.
