The characteristic symptoms of this affection are, welling and florid redness of the mucous membrane of the fauces, and especially of the tonsils; painful and impeded deglutition, accompanied with inflammatory fever. It is generally ascribed to cold, and is one of the most common affections of cold and temperate climates. It is usually goes off by resolution, but frequently ends in suppuration.
