(1742-1823), a clergyman, was born in Connecticut. During the Revolutionary War he served as chaplain, and in 1786 was agent for the Ohio company which founded Marietta. He drafted for Nathan Dane the Ordinance of 1787 which excluded slavery from the Northwest Territory, and was a Massachusetts Federal Congressman from 1801 to 1805.
