Small, fleshy columns, which project, more or less, into the auricles and ventricles of the heart, whose use appears to be prevent too great dilatation of those cavities. A few of these columnae- see Musculi papillares- are attached by one extremity to the walls of the heart, and, by the other, give insertion to chordae tendineae. See Carneous columns.
