A person or thing of the same rank with another; —pl. lines or angles drawn through or about a fixed or given point called the origin, in such relation and proportion as to furnish data by which the position and quantity of any other point, line, &c., in the same plane or curved figure, may be defined and measured. The method coordinates was invented by Descartes, the quantities being treated under algebraic symbols.
