A toxin found in flesh of marine animals, especially some fishes, at some times, in some localities. It is probably of algal origin, causes paresthesia, gastrointestinal symptoms, neuromuscular blockade, and respiratory paralysis due to interference with membrane function. The poisoning is also called ciguatera.
