A Congregational clergyman and educator; born in Natick, Mass., April 6, 1802; died in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 22, 1886. He graduated at Bowdoin College in 1824, at Andover Seminary in 1828; and edited the Boston Recorder, 1829-30. He became professor of Greek at Dartmouth College, 1830-32, and of sacred literature in Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati, O., 1833-35. He married Harriet Elizabeth Beecher, January 1836, and went to Europe to examine the public-school systems. He was professor at Bowdoin, 1850; and at Andover, 1852-64. His works include a translation of Jahn's "Hebrew Commonwealth" (1829); "Lectures on the Poetry of the Hebrews" (1829); "Report on Elementary Education in Europe"; "Introduction to the Criticism and Interpretation of the Bible" (1835); and "Origin and History of the Books of the Bible" (1867).
