A German scholar (1628-80). He was teacher of history in the high-school of his native city, Hamburg, from 1652 to 1660, when he became its rector. He then became superintendent of the Imperial Library, Vienna. His principal writings are: "Introduction to Literary History" (1659), the first methodical work of the kind; "Notes on the Imperial Library" (8 vols., 1665-79), a work of great value for early German language and literature.
