(1507-1559), Spanish explorer, went with Narvaez to Florida in 1527, and accompanied him on his westward march and voyage. He was wrecked near Matagorda Bay in Texas, and captured by the Indians, among whom he became a medicine-man. Finally escaping he reached Mexico after many wanderings, during which he discovered the Rio Grande. He was afterward the first explorer of Paraguay.
