(1796-1861), represented Massachusetts in the U. S. Congress as a Whig from 1831 to 1843, and was prominent as an eloquent debater. He was Governor of Massachusetts from 1843 to 1851. He was a Judge of the Massachusetts Court of Common Pleas from 1851 to 1856, and a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1853.
