(1764 or 1765-1831), was born in England. Becoming imbued with republican ideas, he disposed of his estates and came to the United States in 1797 and purchased an island in the Ohio River, upon which he erected a fine mansion. He became interested in the schemes of Aaron Burr, to which he contributed large sums and for complicity in which he was arrested on a charge of treason, but discharged. The proceedings ruined him.
