The treatment of infectious diseases by means of the injection of bacteria destroyed by heat, or various chemical agents. Its most successful application is made in the treatment of localized inflammation by means of carefully measured doses of dead pyogenic organisms, such as Staphylococcus albus or aureus. This is called the vaccine treatment. [Gr.]
