-
The ancient royal banner of France. The origin of the word is uncertain ; but some suppose it to be from the L. auri flamma, a golden flame. It was at first the banner of the abbey of St. Denis. By some it is said to have been lost at Agincourt ; others affirm that it was last seen in the reign of Charles VII.
