A Finnish poet and philologist; born at Kuopio, Aug. 7, 1826; died at Helsingfors, Nov. 20, 1889. He was appointed professor of Finnish language and literature at the University of Helsingfors in 1862. His poems appeared under the title "Sparks" (4th ed., 1881); besides which he wrote several grammatical and philological works, and translated Schiller and others into Finnish.
