A group of autosomal recessive disorders marked by a deficiency of the hepatic enzyme PHENYLALANINE HYDROXYLASE or less frequently by reduced activity of DIHYDROPTERIDINE REDUCTASE (i.e., atypical phenylketonuria). Classical phenylketonuria is caused by a severe deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase and presents in infancy with developmental delay; SEIZURES; skin HYPOPIGMENTATION; ECZEMA; and demyelination in the central nervous system. - American journalist, verse-writer, editor, lecturer; born in New York city, Oct. 2, 1835. was long known as editor on the Independent(1856-72). established Golden Age(newspaper), but retired from it after two years. 1883 went abroad, where remained. Besides numerous essays fugitive pieces, he has published: "The Sexton's Tale, and Other Poems"(1867); "Sanctum Sanctorum; or, An Editor's Proof Sheets"(1869); "Tempest-Tossed", a romance(1873); "Thou I"(1880); "Suabian Stories",(1882). Died 1907.
