An English traveler, journalist, and statesman; born in Sussex, May 28, 1833. From 1863 to 1866 he was a member of a commission to examine into the causes of the "Cotton Famine", and published a treatise on that subject. In 1885 he became president of the Free Land League. Among his works are: "From the Levant"; "Through Persia by Caravan" (1877); "Social Politics"; and "Free Land".
