An Italian historian and statesman; born in Pieve di Sacco, near Padua, Oct. 30, 1576; assassinated at San Michele, near Verona, about 1631. His eminence in diplomacy and in statecraft has been adequately supplemented in literature by a "History of the Civil Wars in France"; one of the richest sources of information on the subject, as far as it extends (1560 to 1597), and very little discredited by the work of subsequent investigators.
