A Portuguese-Brazilian historian and geographer; born in Portugal about 1795; died in Para, March 28, 1850. He was an officer in the Portuguese, afterward in the Brazilian, army. He studied the geography and history of the Amazon valley. His principal works were: "The Ages of Para" (1838), a historic compend stopping at 1823, and "Chorographic Essay on the Province of Para" (1839), a geographical and statistical work giving the details of explorations made by himself.
