Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. A German novelist and poet (1633-1714), a zealous patron of art and science, author of two voluminous novels, highly famed in their time. They were "The Serene Syrian Aramena" (1669-73) and "The Roman Octavia" (1677). He also composed numerous sacred poems.
