A waxy material found in the animal tissues as a result of diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis, and prolonged suppuration. Like starch it stains with iodin, but it is a proteid and does not resemble starch in its other properties. It consists of a mixture of chondroitin and sulphuric acid and has the formula C18H27NSO4.
